Working at the interface of chemistry and biology has long been instrumental to both gaining a molecular understanding of fundamental biology, as well as the discovery and development of new therapeutics. “Chemical Biology” by definition is an interdisciplinary pursuit that requires experts ranging from synthetic organic chemists, to biochemists and cell biologist. USC continues to grow a critical mass of world-class research scientists in chemical biology through ground breaking initiatives such as the Bridge@USC and the Translational Imaging Center. The Chemical Biology section of the Department of Chemistry and the broader chemical biology community at USC, including members of the Departments of Chemistry, Molecular and Computational Biology, and Chemical Engineering brings these scientists together to shape the future of chemical biology and train the next generation of leaders in the field.

Programmatic Events and Opportunities:
• Regularly schedule research seminars by visiting faculty in the broad areas of Chemical Biology.
• Weekly “internal” research seminars by life sciences faculty: On a rolling basis (date and time to be determined) one participating Principal Investigator will give a formal presentation on the ongoing research in his/her lab. These presentations will be open to the larger Chemical Biology community in addition to participating faculty and students.
• Annual Chemical Biology Symposium: At the start of each academic year students and faculty will attend an informal open house/symposium, which will feature oral and poster presentations from participating students. This symposium is open to the larger Chemical Biology community and serves to foster interactions between the labs, community building, and an atmosphere of collaboration.
• Broad training in Chemical Biology: Participating students can be exposed to a core PhD curriculum that spans chemistry, biology, and pharmaceutical sciences.
• Training in the ethical conduct of research.
• Training in grant writing: Participating faculty will provide one-on-one guidance to help students prepare compelling NSF Graduate Fellowship applications in their first and second years.
